Educational philosophy and administration

JCC's Edward and Thelma Glantz Early Childhood Learning Center’s curriculum emphasizes project-based learning, encouraging children to “grow as individuals as well as members of the Jewish community.” The learning environment is designed to “provoke wonder, curiosity, intellectual engagement and creativity with endless possibilities.” Learning goals include spiritual growth, social development, focus, communication, critical thinking and self-control. Lesson plans balance students’ interests and ideas with teachers’ knowledge and direction. Students engage with science lessons, math manipulatives, Jewish music, art projects, story time, cooking classes, computer lessons, physical education and weekly Shabbat celebrations. Children also help take care of the community garden, documenting, labeling, weeding, watering and harvesting the produce. Director Amy Nelson leads the staff at JCC's Edward and Thelma Glantz Early Childhood Learning Center. Teachers view children as “competent, curious, capable, natural learners who are full of potential.” A center volunteer remarked, “Many relationships and friendships flourish here.” One community member described the staff as “friendly.” The 16-acre campus features private security, a full-sized gymnasium and outdoor play areas.
