About the school

Turtle River Montessori offers full-time and part-time programs for children age eighteen months through six years. Located in Jupiter, Turtle River has been serving families in the area since 1994. Open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and operating year-round, Turtle River’s mission is “to educate children in a holistic manner, serving not just the intellectual but also the social, spiritual, creative and physical needs of every child in our environment.” Parents appreciate the atmosphere at Turtle River, with one saying, “I was so impressed with the love, care and home environment they offer. I knew little about the Montessori philosophy, but this is a real Montessori certified school. You would be so lucky to have your little one here. Once you visit you'll know why.”

Educational philosophy and administration

Turtle River Montessori’s program is rooted in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, a child-centered approach designed around scientific observations of early childhood development. Activities are hands-on and self-directed, and teachers serve as guides. The school’s “Pre-Primary” curriculum for children eighteen months to two years is “designed to gently transition children from home to school,” and is set up to include individual and group activities. This class focuses on several main areas of learning, including practical life, motor skills, sensorial materials, social interaction, language and communication skills, art, and gardening. The “Primary” curriculum for children age three through six years is designed so that students “are able to work freely in the classroom, with the teacher as a guide to facilitate learning to promote the success of each student individually.” This group of preschoolers concentrates on several main areas of study, including practical life, math, language, sensorial materials, and science. Executive Director Lisa Cuomo oversees the staff at Turtle River Montessori. The school employs qualified teachers who have completed “a comprehensive course of study of approximately 1,200 hours of instruction.” Parents describe the staff as “very supporting and caring.” One parent notes, “It is a warm and loving environment where the teachers certainly put the kids first. The school involves the parents and throughout the years whenever I had a question or any sort of issue at all the staff and administration was very helpful and quick to meet with me. They work with you to make sure your child is thriving continuously.”
