About the school

Aguamarina Preschool offers full-time or part-time programs for children age one through five. Serving the South Miami community, it’s open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Aguamarina is a Gold Seal school and a member of the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF). Teachers strive to create an academically challenging and stimulating environment, helping each student think deeply and critically about his or her place in the world and how they, as an individual, can make a difference.

Educational philosophy and administration

Aguamarina follows The Creative Curriculum, with a strong focus on exploring the five senses. The school also uses an Annual Topic Program, “where we start on a macro scale (Universe) and finish in micro (ourselves).” The monthly themes all tie into one another and connect, allowing children to build a solid foundation of logic and association. Aguamarina created its own learning structure that includes math, science, art, dramatic play, gym and literacy, all relating back to the monthly theme. The students go over these lessons in different “learning zones,” such as an art studio, science lab and fantasy land. Teachers get a detailed book every month explaining how to carry out the lessons. Students also learn Spanish. Aguamarina Director Lina Rivero values discipline, while letting children explore their creativity and freedom. Educators “handle discipline through positive reinforcement and observation. When we observe an inappropriate behavior we stop, observe and find the trigger that cause it. Then we redirect and trace a strategy according to each situation needs.” The academic director is in constant communication with families and educators, making sure everyone is reaching the same learning objectives. The school sends weekly emails so parents know what their children are experiencing.
