About the school

REM Learning Center offers full-time and part-time programs for children age one through five, including VPK. This Gold Seal School has been serving families in the Miami area since 1982. It’s open Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, with before-care and after-care. The school is dedicated to providing “quality child care, in a cost effective manner, with knowledgeable and educated teachers in a nurturing, loving, caring and developmentally appropriate environment.” One parent praises, “This is an amazing place to leave your kids.”

Educational philosophy and administration

REM Learning Center’s curriculum is based on using creative activities to develop goals. Students participate in thematic, multi-sensory, play-based activities organized around math, literacy, language, social studies, science, social, motor, health and artistic developmental milestones. Children can also enroll in speech therapy, Spanish, French, ballet, karate, gymnastics, t-ball and violin lessons. The pre-K4 curriculum uses STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) concepts as well as design, systems and computational thinking to “introduce 21st century skills and inspire a lifelong love of learning at an early age.” Students experience a Make Play Share Studio where they “engage in multiple forms of play while they learn about, discover and put to use tools, technologies and concepts that they are generally not exposed to in a traditional classroom.” These technologies include an Epilog laser engraver, a Shopbot desktop, a CraftROBO vinyl cutter and an Ultimaker 3D printer. The program follows a constructivist, challenge-based philosophy where students encounter design problems, develop solutions in teams and then express the thought processes that led to their solutions. One caretaker commented, “My sister has been at REM for three years now and I can honestly say the care and education she has received there is superb! The knowledge my sister has gained at REM surpasses that of other kids her age whom I have met. Everyone who meets her is astonished at how much she knows and the way she carries herself. She has amazing grammar and reading skills all thanks to the various teachers she has had throughout the years. She is very inquisitive about the world around her and has gained a self-confidence and self-advocacy [skills] she did not have before being at REM.” Director Jacqueline Moreno leads the staff at REM Learning Center. She is an adjunct professor at Florida International University and holds a Florida Child Care and Education Program Director's Credential - Advanced Level with VPK Endorsement. She previously worked as a research assistant and ethnographer. One community member observed, “The entire REM staff is one of excellent quality. They are very humane, real and care about every child at the school and their well-being. They instill in their students not only the necessary educational skills to advance in such a rapidly changing society, but also teach them to be compassionate human beings with a lot of empathy and care towards the world. They truly offer a well-rounded wholehearted education to all the students.”
